Pileup is a position-oriented alignment format. For every chromosomal position it shows the aligned bases and their qualities. This facilitates SNP/indel calling and brief alignment viewing by eyes. Several variants of the format exist. Probably the most popular one is the one generated with the samtools mpileup command (see 'Links' below).
